The site of the former iconic Hoffman’s Furniture store in the heart of downtown Rochester will soon see new life with construction underway for a 6-story mixed-use building with financing support led by MVSB (Meredith Village Savings Bank).

Developers Paul and Greg Grant of Lilac City Development purchased the site at 44-55 North Main Street in November 2021. The former furniture store had sat vacant for more than 30 years before being demolished in August 2022. Traynor Cully, MVSB Commercial Loan Officer, worked closely with Paul and Greg to develop a $13 million construction lending package to lead financing efforts for the project.

Once complete, the building will feature 9 one-bedroom and 36 two-bedroom apartments, 9 interior garage parking spaces, as well as a 2,300-sq-ft commercial space on the lower level. Residential units will be equipped with desirable modern touches, such as quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances and in-unit laundry. Additional amenities will include a pet washing station and package pickup area.

“The building design takes inspiration from the downtown history, but incorporates a modern feel with new design elements already present along North Main Street,” said Greg. “We hope this project will help address some of the housing needs in the area and further downtown Rochester’s resurgence.”

“It takes a great deal of trust and partnership to tackle important community projects like this one, and we were very happy to be able to work with a local bank who shares our commitment to doing right by the people and businesses of Rochester,” said Paul. “Traynor and the team at MVSB have gone above and beyond in addressing our needs in finding the right financing solutions that have helped this project move forward. We are grateful for the expertise and support of all those involved.”

The building was designed by Market Square Architects of Portsmouth with construction led by Groen Construction of Rochester. The City of Rochester also granted Lilac City Development the community revitalization tax relief incentive, which encourages investment in rehabilitation of under-utilized building in eligible areas. Construction is anticipated to be completed in June 2024.

“MVSB is proud to invest in local business opportunities that support the Rochester community. We are excited to see this project taking shape and look forward to all it will bring to the downtown area,” said Traynor.

Unlike a stock bank, MVSB is a mutual savings bank that operates for the benefit of its depositors, borrowers and surrounding communities. As a result, MVSB has remained steadfast in fostering the economic health and well-being of the community since it was founded in 1869. For over 150 years, Meredith Village Savings Bank (MVSB), has been serving the people, businesses, nonprofits and municipalities of New Hampshire. MVSB and its employees are guided by the values of accountability, mutuality, excellence, respect, integrity, teamwork and stewardship. PORTSMOUTH AND SOMERSWORTH – A nurse at Greater Seacoast Community Health is one of 10 New Hampshire residents chosen to join a Hepatitis Network Learning Community aimed at improving the state’s plan to eliminate viral hepatitis and ensuring that people who inject drugs are included in that plan. The group will meet for six months to devise an action plan to link NH residents to treatment and harm-reduction services by working to strengthen existing partnerships so as to reach the people that need it most.

The nurse, Deneige Hudanish, RN, coordinates the Medication-Assisted Recovery and Hepatitis C programs at Families First Health Center and Goodwin Community Health, the health centers in Portsmouth and Somersworth that make up Greater Seacoast Community Health.

Hudanish is passionate about removing the stigma associated with Hepatitis C, which often causes people delay treatment. “With Hepatitis C, there is a clear outcome if someone takes the medication as prescribed,” she says. “Being able to provide this treatment for people actively using or with a lot of barriers is rewarding. They often don’t expect to get treatment. I had a patient last week who is in treatment for substance use disorder and had been previously told he could not access Hepatitis C treatment. Once the appropriate referral was made I was able to coordinate his treatment. He couldn’t believe it. It was motivation for him to cut way back on his drinking.”

One of the biggest barriers to Hepatitis C treatment at other medical providers in the region is that patients are not eligible to receive treatment until they’ve achieved six months of recovery. “We are unique as we will treat someone who’s actively using drugs or unhoused,” Hudanish says. “We try to make our program as low-barrier as possible. There’s no evidence to justify withholding treatment."

Removing barriers is a key part of the services offered at Families First and Goodwin Community Health.

Coreen Toussaint, RN, manages the organization's mobile health clinics, which serve many people experiencing homelessness. She appreciates Hudanish’s dedication. “She is very passionate about helping people receive treatment for Hepatitis C," Toussaint says. "I’m happy to see her recognized for the amazing things we do for our patients that go above and beyond what is typically done in primary care.”

Hepatitis C often has no symptoms, or very subtle symptoms such as fatigue and jaundice. Left untreated over a long period of time, Hepatitis C can be fatal, according to Tiffaney Burdick, LPN, who manages the Medication-Assisted Recovery Program at Goodwin Community Health and Families First.

“It can be easy to ignore if a person isn’t symptomatic or if there is stigma or shame associated with condition for the patient,” Burdick says. “Some may even forget about it because it’s been so many years since they were diagnosed. Hepatitis C can be a decades-long disease.”

Greater Seacoast Community Health is a network of community health centers providing primary care, pediatrics, dental care, prenatal care, behavioral health counseling, substance use disorder treatment, mobile health services, WIC, social work services, a pharmacy, parenting classes, playgroups and home visiting. Services are open to everyone and aim to be respectful, recovery-friendly, LGBTQ-affirming and trauma-informed. For more information, visit GetCommunityHealth.org.

DOVER, NH – For a decade running, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has remained among the best hospitals in the nation for patient experience, according to rankings released Wednesday by Healthgrades, a healthcare data company.

2023 is the 10th consecutive year Wentworth-Douglass has been named a recipient of the company’s outstanding patient experience award, which is given to those ranked among the top 15% in the nation in that category.

Wentworth-Douglass was the only hospital honored with the 2023 award on the Seacoast.

“To consistently be awarded this honor is a real example of how we strive to set Wentworth-Douglass apart. A decade of recognition for our patient experience showcases the unwavering commitment our staff has in providing compassionate, quality care,” said Jeff Hughes, President and COO of Wentworth-Douglass. “This award reflects their dedication, innovation, and patient-centered approach.”

For the annual analysis, Healthgrades independently analyzed patient experience surveys from HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The company found that 81% of patients would “definitely recommend” Wentworth-Douglass, 11% higher than the national average.

Healthgrades’ ratings are publicly available on their website: www.healthgrades.com.

MVSB (Meredith Village Savings Bank) is proud to support the Regional Economic Development Center (REDC) with a $5,500 tax credit purchase through the Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA). The tax credits support the REDC’s New Americans Loan Fund, which offers business financing to new American business owners seeking to open or grow a business in New Hampshire.

“REDC is thankful for the generous support MVSB has provided in purchasing tax credits that will aid this vital program,” said Laurel Adams, REDC President. “The NH New Americans Loan Fund ensures the newest members of our communities have the opportunity to start and grow their own businesses in the granite state, which is what the American dream is all about.”

“We are proud to contribute to the efforts at the Regional Economic Development and all the crucial work they do to invest in New Hampshire’s business community,” said Marcus Weeks, MVSB President. “Purchasing tax credits through the CDFA allows our donations to be dispersed where it is needed most and reach a wide variety of businesses.”

REDC was established in 1994 as a nonprofit economic development organization with a mission to serve new and growing businesses in southern New Hampshire. REDC seeks to promote responsible, sustainable economic development activities within southern New Hampshire by creating jobs for low-to-moderate income people, accessing alternative financing for businesses, and industrial expansion or relocations. These initiatives provide tax relief for communities within the region. REDC also provides free start-up and ongoing business advising, which supports businesses as they grow. Go to redc.com for more information.

CDFA tax credits allow businesses to fund qualifying economic or community development projects in exchange for a tax credit that can be applied against state business tax payments. The tax credits are administered by the New Hampshire CDFA. Any business with operations in New Hampshire that contributes to a CDFA tax credit project receives a New Hampshire state tax credit worth 75 percent of their contribution. The credit can be used over a period of five years to reduce the business’ state tax liability (business profits, business enterprise, or insurance premium taxes). The tax credit program allows New Hampshire businesses to use their state tax dollars to support local projects that they care about. CDFA reviews many project applications each year, and awards tax credits to those they determine are feasible and will make the biggest impact on economic development in the state. Visit nhcdfa.org for more information.

Dover, NH – Due to the winter storm that will arrive overnight and result in a high rate of accumulating snow,  wind, and significant snow totals, the decision has been made to curtail all service on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. “We really do not want to suspend service again this winter season, but feel this is the most sensible decision we could make based on the predicted conditions,” stated Rad Nichols, COAST Executive Director.

Based on the current forecast, COAST plans to return to normal operations on Wednesday. When COAST resumes service, expect delays as storm cleanup may still be affecting the roads and walkways.

Nichols commented further, “We understand how these curtailments negatively impact people, and do not make these decisions lightly. As always, when traveling after the storm, please be safe on your way to and from bus stops. Please do not wait for the bus on top of snowbanks. Find the nearest driveway opening; make sure you are visible to the bus operator and wave as the bus approaches. In low light conditions wave a lit cell phone or flashlight to make you more visible to the bus operator.” COAST recommends wearing bright clothing, having reflectors and carrying a flashlight.
