Rochester, NH – Cornerstone VNA is looking for volunteers to join their thriving ‘A Matter of Balance’ program as a volunteer coach.  This important program is designed to help people in the community manage concerns about falls and increase physical activity.

The next volunteer coaches training will take place on April 25 and 26 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the new Community Room at the Cornerstone VNA office on 178 Farmington Road in Rochester, NH. No previous experience is needed to become a volunteer coach. Rochester, NH – Cornerstone Visiting Nurse Association, a local nonprofit organization, is pleased to introduce a new mobile phlebotomy service for individuals who need lab draws done at home. Cornerstone VNA was able to launch this innovative service by using generous funding from FedPoint to purchase several mobile centrifuge machines, which are used to spin blood samples. The goal of this service is to make lab testing more convenient and comfortable for individuals needing routine lab work.

If an individual needs their blood drawn but cannot get to a lab site due to mobility issues or other factors, Cornerstone VNA will go to wherever they call home. For some people, an illness or disability can make it hard to travel, and some may simply want to avoid crowded outpatient labs, driving, and wait times. It is also the perfect service for individuals who may prefer the convenience and privacy of receiving care in their own home. In-home phlebotomy services can also help individuals with anxiety and needle phobia, or who have standing orders for repeat testing.

According to Janice Howard, Life Care – Private Duty Director, “We are very happy with the addition of phlebotomy to our services. It can be difficult for some people to get to a lab due to transportation or physical barriers. We know sometimes this means people do not get their blood work done often enough, or in some cases not at all. It is our goal to help our patients, and doctors to accomplish better health care outcomes by reducing the number of instances that a patient must forego their lab work.”

The mobile phlebotomy program is a private pay service, typically not covered by insurance. Also, a doctor’s order for routine labs is required, which can be sent directly to Cornerstone VNA. Upon receipt of a doctor’s order, Cornerstone VNA will call the patient to schedule an appointment. Through the mobile phlebotomy program, a certified phlebotomist will go to the patient’s home to provide collection services. Once the blood specimen has been collected, the Cornerstone VNA phlebotomist will use the mobile centrifuge to spin the sample, following all protocols for accurate handling, packaging, and delivery to the correct laboratory for processing. Once the sample has been processed by the lab, the results will be sent directly to the patient’s doctor’s office for review. The phlebotomy service at Cornerstone VNA will operate Monday through Friday 8-4:30. For further information, please contact the Life Care – Private Duty department at Cornerstone VNA at 603-332-1133 Ext 1758.

Cornerstone VNA currently serves Rockingham, Strafford, Belknap and Carroll Counties in New Hampshire and York County in Maine. The team at Cornerstone VNA provides award-winning care and support through five distinct programs: Home Care, Hospice Care, Palliative Care, Life Care-Private Duty, and Community Care. For 109 years, Cornerstone VNA has been committed to bringing services to people of all ages so that families can stay together at home, even when facing the challenges of aging, surgical recovery, chronic or life-threatening illnesses or end-of-life care. Kennebunk Savings is announcing a recent $30,000 grant to Early Learning New Hampshire, along with a $20,000 donation to the Richie MacFarland Children’s Center. Both are part of a slate of donations from the bank centered on strengthening area child development programs.

“As a community bank, we love to support a wide array of local nonprofits, events and initiatives,” said Liz Torrance, Social Responsibility Manager with Kennebunk Savings. “But we know we can do more, and go further with our giving. We’re working more to actively identify and seek out ways in which our support can create lasting, positive change in our communities. Investing in our children is a very literal expression of that overall effort.”

Early Learning NH’s grant supports the “Child Care Business Response Team” project—a collaboration aimed at providing more stable childcare programs statewide. The grant from the bank will specifically lead to direct assistance for 8 different childcare organizations in the area. “It’s like an SAU,” explains Jackie Cowell, Executive Director at Early Learning NH. “The Business Response Team creates one single back office for all of these organizations. We provide the workforce behind the workforce, rather than making caregivers carry that administrative load.”

“The team at Early Learning NH – they’re bridge-builders,” added Bradford C. Paige, the bank’s President and CEO. “The childcare system is struggling, which has a huge impact not only on current local business needs, but also the future of our children. We’re excited for the network of supports the Business Response Team will be putting in place and the many ways that will help local childcare organizations keep moving forward.”

The Richie MacFarland Children’s Center (RMCC) recently merged with Waypoint – both organizations are providers of early intervention services for Seacoast area children with developmental delays or disabilities. The grant from Kennebunk Savings will be used to hire a social worker to assist with some cases. “The educational and therapeutic strategies shared with parents and caregivers to support their child’s development are not as successful when outside stressors on the family impact their ability to provide a safe and stable environment for which the child to learn and grow,” observes Peggy Small-Porter, RMC’s Executive Director.

“This is one of those opportunities that quickly leads to more opportunities,” said Paige. “The conversations that RMCC begins with families will connect them to other needed services, which leads to greater knowledge of and access to those services, which leads to more and more successful and stable families in the community.”

In 2021, the Kennebunk Savings Spotlight Fund grants began targeting programs that advance the accessibility, affordability and quality of early childhood services and resources in Maine and New Hampshire. The grants are focused on capacity expansion and quality improvement of childcare and educational programs for pre-K kids, parents and teachers.

ROCHESTER, NH – Mayor Paul Callaghan visited Frisbie Memorial Hospital yesterday, March 30, 2022, on this year’s National Doctors’ Day to present a joint proclamation signed by all three mayors of the Tri-Cities – Somersworth, Rochester, and Dover – to celebrate the extraordinary physicians who have shown commitment, compassion and resilience to keep patients and our communities healthy. Dr. Trevor Eide, Chief Medical Officer at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, accepted the joint proclamation on behalf of our dedicated colleagues.

“I am proud to work alongside colleagues that remain committed to improving lives of our patients and communities. At Frisbie Memorial Hospital, we are truly grateful for all the physicians who show up and stand together, providing care and saving lives, every day,” said Dr. Trevor Eide. “We appreciate Mayors Callaghan, Hilliard, and Carrier for observing National Doctors’ Day and honoring the dedicated physicians of Rochester, Somersworth, and Dover and across the Granite State.”

National Doctors’ Day is celebrated each year on March 30 and recognizes the hard work and dedication doctors provide caring for patients, and their contributions to the broader community. The very first National Doctors’ Day was observed in 1933 by the city of Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician, Dr. Charles B. Almond, was the first to recognize a need to honor physicians and arranged for the community to mail greeting cards to physicians and place flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. The holiday was created by President George H.W. Bush in 1991.

3D mammography and bone density services now available in Rochester

Rochester, NH (March 30, 2022) — Frisbie Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the opening of its new Breast Imaging Center, located onsite in a brand new suite that is designed for comfort and privacy to ensure an optimum patient experience. The Breast Imaging Center uses state-of-the-art technology, including 3D mammogram (tomosynthesis), breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and image-guided biopsy services to bring advanced capabilitites, with improved diagnostic accuracy, to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages.

“We are very exciting to offer comprehensive breast imaging and bone density services to the community,” said Tim Jones, CEO of Frisbie Memorial Hospital. “With a focus on meeting patients’ needs and maintaining the highest standards of care, we have brought convenient access to innovative breast imaging services, close to home.”

According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, such as it may during a routine screening mammogram, when it is small and before it causes symptoms (like a lump in the breast that can be felt), it is easier to treat successfully.

For more information about the Breast Imaging Center at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, call (603) 602-5460 or visit frisbiehospital.com.

Rochester, NH – Cornerstone VNA, a local nonprofit home health and hospice care provider, recently received a generous donation of $484 from the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) students at the Richard W. Creteau Regional Technology Center at Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH. This donation is a result of a special bake sale that the students organized to support the Kiddie Cornerstone Fund at Cornerstone VNA.

The Kiddie Cornerstone Fund was established in 2016 to provide gifts for the organization’s pediatric patients to bring smiles to their youngest patients and to promote hope and healing at home. In addition to gifts, such as books, coloring books, and small toys, funds are also used to purchase gas cards to assist with transportation to medical appointments for families in need.

“Childhood illnesses are scary for young patients and their families, and the financial burden can be so overwhelming,” shares Erika Lee, Director of Advancement. “Thanks to donations to our Kiddie Cornerstone Fund, we can provide an extra layer of support in the form of toys and books, special equipment, gas cards, and even gifts over the holidays. We are very grateful to the students for their efforts to support our young patients.”

HOSA Co-President, Mia Baillargeon shares, “We are fortunate enough to have a great group of ladies [students] this year that are passionate about serving the community and reaching out to those who may need it most. Of course we could have raised money for ourselves, but this was something more honorable, that makes an impact on others.” HOSA Advisor, Lisa Kumph adds, “Our HOSA group was very excited to be able to support the children in our community. The students and staff at Spaulding High School and the Creteau Tech Center demonstrated their generosity through support of the bake sale.”

Rochester, NH – The City of Rochester and Vouchers for Veterans is proud to announce that they will once again be putting heroism on display this Memorial Day Weekend. Like last year’s event held at the Rochester Common, full size American Flags will be displayed around and within the 1/3-mile oval park. The Field of Honor is free to the public and will open on Saturday, May 28,2022, at 9am. The display will remain in place until dismantling early Tuesday morning, May 31, 2022. Each night at 7pm a bugler will play taps to commemorate members of all branches of the armed forces. This year 550 flags will be erected with 100 of those dedicated specifically to NH and ME veterans who died in service. The multi-day event expects to draw thousands of visitors who will come and pay their respects to the men and women who have served our country, some with the ultimate sacrifice.

Flags are available to dedicate at www.vouchersforveterans.org. Each flag is 3 feet by 5 feet and costs $40.00. You may choose to purchase and pay securely online or print a form and mail it with a check. You may also choose to honor a specific veteran, living or deceased, or allow Vouchers for Veterans to choose one on your behalf. If you purchase multiple flags they will be located together within the display. Volunteers will be on-site throughout the weekend to help you locate your flag(s). Many veterans will show their pride in serving their country by purchasing one for themselves and many friends and family members of veterans will want to honor their veteran in this way. Each flag will be identified with a laminated card containing the name, branch and rank of the veteran. Those who died in action will be denoted with a black cross and each card is attached to the flagpole with a yellow silk ribbon. After the event you may keep your flag, or you may donate it back for future events. Flags may be picked up on June 4, 2022, from 2-5pm at the American Legion Post 7. You may choose to have your flag mailed to you. All sales end May 15, 2022, or until flags are sold out.

A Memorial Day Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 30th beginning at 11am. The American Legion Post 7 will open the ceremony with the presentation of colors followed by the laying of the wreaths for each branch of the military. Mayor Paul Callaghan will welcome all in attendance and provide opening remarks. General Donald Bolduc will speak next, followed by other guest speakers yet to be determined. Vouchers for Veterans has reached out to others and invited them to speak at the ceremony, including Governor Sununu and Senators Shaheen and Hassan. As it is still early in the planning process, they hope that those invitations are accepted. For those that wish to, they may bring a chair to the ceremony.

Jeanne Grover, President of Vouchers for Veterans, is very excited to bring this event back for a second year. “Last year’s event was very emotional for many visitors”, said Grover, “I witnessed several people wiping away tears as they strolled among the field of flags and read the names on the cards. I was also very moved when I saw George Sherwood play taps at his deceased brother’s flag despite the cold and rain that day. I expect to see him and his lovely wife Jane again this year.” George Sherwood is a 94-year-old World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Vouchers for Veterans would like to thank their generous sponsors this year. Holy Rosary Credit Union is sponsoring 60 flags this year to commemorate their 60th Anniversary. Those flags will specifically honor those veterans that died while serving their country. They are also providing several volunteers to help through the planning process and the weekend of the event. Other sponsors include WitWay Supply Co., Home Depot, and Lowes. For anyone interested in becoming a sponsor for this year’s patriotic event, please reach out to Vouchers for Veterans for more information at 603-817-6030.

Since 2016, Vouchers for Veterans has provided vouchers to local veterans for the purchase of fresh locally sourced food at local farmers markets. New this year, veterans may begin attending designated Winter Farmers Markets, as well as choosing each week from 9 participating farmers markets in September.

Grover states, “This is a first in the nation program of its kind. The program helps three different groups of people simultaneously. The veterans receive the fresh food and ‘thanks’ for serving, the farmers, growers, and food preparers receive the face value of each voucher redeemed, and lastly by keeping it local the money stays in the community. It’s a win win win!”

Their two largest contributors, Iron Tails Saloon and Swim With A Mission, have made it possible for VforV to now provide fresh food weekly to New Hampshire and Maine veterans five months out of the year. Also, while attending the markets, the veterans have an opportunity to speak with a representative from Military Affairs and Veterans Services to learn of benefits for which they may qualify yet did not know existed. The program is not based on need and is intended to be a “thank you” from community members for the veterans’ service.

All net proceeds help to fund Vouchers for Veterans.

Concord, N.H. – (Jan 25, 2022) – As the ongoing pandemic continues to impact tourism destinations worldwide, New Hampshire experienced a record-breaking summer and strong year overall according to New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism Development (DTTD)’s research.

“New Hampshire is the best place to live, work, raise a family – and also take a vacation,” said Governor Chris Sununu. “With this record-breaking summer tourist season, it’s clear that the Granite State is the number one destination for families looking to have fun, experience our beautiful state, and shop tax-free. Thanks to all the businesses who helped make it happen – next year’s going to be even better!”

In Summer 2021, the state welcomed 4.4 million visitors who spent more than $2.1 billion, breaking previous records set pre-pandemic in Summer 2019 and representing a 21% increase in visitors and a 5% increase in spending for the season. With winter and fall, Fiscal Year (FY) 2021, New Hampshire had a record number of visitors at 12.8 million spending over $5.5 billion, which equals $322.6 million in state tax revenue.

"My hats off to this state’s incredible tourism industry, going from recovery to record breaking in one season like this” said Taylor Caswell, commissioner of NH Department of Business and Economic Affairs. “Our Tourism team here at BEA kept a marketing presence in key states throughout the pandemic, so while other states retreated, we were poised to come out of the gate fast … and that worked.  We have every reason to believe that people are coming back and loving what they can see and do here in New Hampshire for an experience of a lifetime.”

As a result of DTTD’s strategic marketing efforts across paid, owned and earned channels, FY2021 yielded one of the strongest returns on investment (ROI) measured. The total fiscal year ROI generated $197 in visitor spending for each $1 invested – and $12.08 in tax revenue for each $1 invested. Based on the average visitor spending on taxable categories in the state, FY21 marketing efforts generated more than $35.7 million in state and local taxes (+7% from 2019’s $33 million).

"While we still have a long road to recovery, these numbers are evidence that New Hampshire’s dining, lodging, and attractions are delivering popular options and memorable experiences at the very time consumers need it most,” said Mike Somers, CEO and President of the NH Lodging and Restaurant Association.  “Were it not for workforce shortages and supply chain issues, New Hampshire's hospitality businesses would have prospered even more during this summer's record-breaking season.”

Here are more details and results by seasons:

    Spring/Summer 2021

Knowing that competition would be fierce for Summer 2021 tourists, New Hampshire made the largest marketing investment in the past four years at $2.4 million. The campaign resulted in a ROI for each $1 invested, $12.08 was returned in taxes. All seven regions of the state reported an increase in both visitor spending and overnight visits in Spring/Summer 2021, when compared to 2019.

    Winter 2020/21

Winter 2020/21 total visitor spending achieved $1 billion, nearly reaching the pre-pandemic Winter 2019/20 total of $1.2 billion, and total trips of 2.7 million was just shy of 2020’s 2.9 million.

    Fall 2020

Total spending in Fall 2020 returned $286 in visitor spending and $16 in tax revenue for each $1 invested, garnering the fiscal year’s strongest ROI.

Tourism leaders from around the state reflect on the last year:

    Dartmouth Lake Sunapee Region

Tracy Hutchins, President, Upper Valley Business Alliance

“The data on increased visitation from the New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism clearly shows what we in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region know: this area is a terrific place to visit for a day or spend a vacation. This region may be one of New Hampshire's "quieter" regions, but if you are looking for great outdoor experiences, terrific food, and a huge variety of cultural experiences (such as home to the only professional opera company north of New York, live performances and theater, arts & crafts), then the DLSR is the place to be! From enjoying sunsets on Sunapee or Mascoma Lakes, to shopping in Hanover, and riding the 56-mile rail trail from Lebanon to Boscawen or watching the exciting mountain bike races at Arrowhead in Claremont, there is something for everyone.”

    Great North Woods

Paula Kinney, Executive Director, Androscoggin Valley Chamber of Commerce

“The Androscoggin Valley reports a very busy summer tourism season in 2021.  Many of the hospitality businesses reported a record-breaking season, with August especially busy. Despite all the changes and special accommodations these businesses had to face due to the pandemic, getting outside in the warmer months and enjoying all that our region has to offer was incredibly popular. The money that tourism brings into our area is extremely vital to our economy and small businesses.  Businesses look forward to the busier times to help bring them through the “off season” when they rely solely on the locals supporting them.”

    Lakes Region

Amy Landers, Executive Director, Lakes Region Tourism Association

“The Lakes Region had a record-breaking summer and fall season this year.  So far winter has been extremely strong as well.  During Christmas vacation week activities such as tubing and skiing were sold out and occupancy was at a record high throughout the region. There is large demand for our New Hampshire product.  Visitors are looking for outdoor recreation; scenic drives; natural beauty and the urban setting we offer.  We’re already seeing strong bookings for 2022 and many properties are above last year’s figures for prebooking’s.  Our advice is to plan and book early so you are not disappointed.”

    Merrimack Valley Region
Tim Sink, President, Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce

“The record-breaking numbers for visitor spending throughout the State this spring and summer were very encouraging.  Business and leisure traffic in the Merrimack Valley region was up substantially, and that is most welcome good news during these challenging times.”

    Monadnock Region

Luca Paris, President & CEO, Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce

“As a business owner before taking over the Greater Keene and Peterborough Chamber in September of 2021, I noticed a real increase of people coming to our region. We did as much as we could to make our guests comfortable and folks from surrounding areas like Vermont and Massachusetts felt that was the case in the summer of 2020. AS the summer and fall of 2021 rolled in we received so many return guests to the area. The City of Keene felt the increase as did other border towns of the Monadnock Region. I have a saying I share with all new visitors to our region; you may find the Monadnock Region by accident, but I guarantee you will come back on purpose. I believe that was a large part of what happened to our region and the growth in visits!”

    Seacoast Region

Ben VanCamp, Chief Collaborator & President, Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth

“It is encouraging to see the numbers reflect what we experienced in Portsmouth this past spring and summer.  Everyone was ready to travel and smaller, walkable destinations like Portsmouth were desirable.”

    White Mountains Region

Charyl Reardon, President, White Mountains Attractions Association

“After so much uncertainty in 2020 and even some still today, it is wonderful to see how strong Tourism has rebounded in the White Mountains welcoming several million visitors, millions in travel related spending, and support for so many households and nearly 15,000 tourism related careers. It goes without saying that Tourism brings people, and people bring Investment. Tourism is vital to the economic growth of not only the White Mountains region, but throughout New Hampshire. Just ask any of the restaurants, retail shops, campgrounds, and lodges. Or the banks, hospitals, and schools that serve the residents who depend on tourism.”
