South Berwick, ME- Queer writers of all levels are welcome to sign up for Community Word, a free ten-week writing class, co-hosted by Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance and Historic New England, Wednesdays, September 14-November 16, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum.

Community Word will bring together LGBTQIA+ youth and elders to express and share stories, words, and moments from their lives.

Instructor Jan Bindas-Tenney will support participants in considering queer friendship and the fierce bonds, sadness, and light of queer chosen family by reading letters between Audre Lorde and Pat Parker, poems by Cameron Awkward Rich, Danez Smith, and CA Conrad among others.

Participants will experiment with creative writing, generate new work, pursuing and polishing at least one selected piece to be collected with other participants’ work in a published chapbook at the end of the class.

Iconic Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett (1849 - 1909) found the love of her life in Annie Fields. Theirs was a mutually supportive and committed relationship that allowed each to pursue their passions. Jewett was born in her South Berwick home and as an adult spent several months there each year, most of that time devoted to writing. The house was a constant in her life.

Rollinsford, NH- Rollinsford’s historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House will host Banjos, Bones, and Ballads, a program of tavern songs, banjo tunes, early hymns, sailor songs, and humorous stories by well-known singer and folklorist Jeff Warner, on Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 pm. Funded by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities with additional local support from Janco Electronics, this program is free and open to the public, and no pre-registration is required.

Jeff presents musical traditions from the lumber camps of the Adirondack Mountains and the whaling ports of New England to the Outer Banks fishing villages of North Carolina, and accompanies his songs on concertina, banjo, guitar, and several pocket instruments, such as bones and spoons. He is a Folklorist and Community Scholar for the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and a former State Arts Council Fellow. A founder of the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival, Jeff has toured nationally for the Smithsonian Institution and has recorded for Flying Fish, Rounder Records and other labels.

The public is invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy this program in the garden of the Wentworth House. In case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to First Parish Federated Church, 150 Main Street, South Berwick, ME.

Located on Water Street in Rollinsford, the circa 1701 Wentworth House is maintained by the Association for Rollinsford Culture and History (ARCH) as an educational and cultural center. Rollinsford, NH- Take a unique guided tour of the Salmon Falls River by canoe or kayak with the Association for Rollinsford Culture and History (ARCH) on Saturday, August 6 from 9:30 am to noon. Tour a portion of the river in Rollinsford, Somersworth and Berwick, and learn about sites related to Native American life, early European settlement, mills, town history and more, while enjoying the lovely scenery along the way.

Rollinsford, NH- The ancient craft of spinning – once a necessity for creating textiles for clothing and furnishings - is now a craft pursued by artisans and hobbyists as an expression of personal creativity. Wheels of Industry: New England Spinning Wheels, a new exhibit at Rollinsford’s historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House, features several early examples of these important tools of domestic industry. The exhibit is on view on Saturdays from 1 to 4 pm through October 8, and at other times by appointment.

Drawn primarily from the collection of Tare Shirt Farm in Berwick, Maine, Wheels of Industry features a variety of early spinning wheels, including great wheels, treadle wheels, double flyers, a chair wheel, and a castle wheel. While some of the wheels were made by local artisans, the majority were produced throughout New England and, in one case, Quebec.

In conjunction with Wheels of Industry, the Wentworth House is also hosting Spinning Sundays on the last Sunday of each month through September 25. Visitors are invited to drop in and learn to spin from 11 am to 1 pm (free; all materials provided and no registration required), or bring their own wheel or other fiber arts project for a Spin-In from 1 to 4 pm. As an added bonus, at 1 pm on July 31, textile expert Peter Cook will demonstrate flax processing, followed by a guided tour of the exhibit.

Rochester, NH- Cornerstone VNA, a local nonprofit home health and hospice care provider, is looking for individuals who are interested in becoming a Hospice volunteer. Currently, the greatest need for volunteers is in the seacoast and southern Maine areas. For as little as 3-4 hours per week, volunteers can offer companionship, respite care and their own unique skills to patients and family members in their community. Volunteers receive a comprehensive 8-week Hospice Volunteer Training program that focuses on how to provide comfort, support and a reassuring presence to Hospice patients and their families. No medical or volunteer experience is necessary to make a positive difference.

Current Cornerstone VNA Hospice Volunteers recently shared, “Hospice volunteering has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my life”, “It is extremely rewarding, knowing that I am doing something that eases the burden of the family” and "Hospice visiting has shown me how to be present.” Cornerstone VNA invites individuals to be a part of this enriching and meaningful volunteer experience.
